Atrium Hotel Tower Pacific Place
The Atrium Hotel is a high rise upmarket hotel project located at Central, Hong Kong, which includes a central void connected to all levels without any fire rated separation.
The atrium hotel project is the conversion of a high profile existing 50 storey building into a modern and state of the art architectural feature. The building is separated into two parts, the podium level which consist of the Marriott hotel (Levels 8-35) and the tower which is to be converted from serviced apartments into hotel guest rooms (Levels 37-50). The main feature of the building is the use of a central void that connects all the levels within the tower portion of the building. The top level of the hotel is converted into a signature restaurant. The existing egress provisions and increase in occupant loading associated with restaurant presented inherent challenges to the design team.

The approach adopted by Scientific Fires Services resulted in the existing building infrastructure to be adapted to accommodate the new and challenging design. Using state of the art computational programs including CFD for fire and smoke spread and Simulex for occupant movement, detailed modelling was conducted to simulate conditions in the event of a fire.
The type of design adopted for the project without compartmentation of a central atrium from surrounding circulation corridors is not common practice in Hong Kong, so the approach and design was considered to be fresh and innovative for this type of building.
